She arrived to bid farewell, adorned in her favorite fragrance.

Perfume

Around 20 years ago I was living with my then girlfriend Kate in East Sussex.

Her grandmother lived in Witney, Oxfordshire. She was a nice lady and very fond of Kate, fussing around her when we visited.

However, her heart was weak and failing and one night we were summoned to the John Radcliffe hospital where she had been admitted. When we visited she was smiling between gulps of oxygen, explaining that her legs were filling up with fluid and she didn't think she would be going back home. Kate was very upset. She was losing her beloved grandmother. A few days later she passed away.

The night after she died, we were at home asleep in bed, when suddenly we were both awoken at the same time by the strongest smell of flowery perfume that filled our bedroom. The aroma was so intense. We looked at each other and Kate said to me " it's the scent my grandmother wears". She smiled and cried as the aroma began to fade. I said to her "I think your grandmother was stopping by to look in on you"

There have been moments in my life when the scent of a cologne worn by someone passing by has evoked memories of past lovers and times. However, this particular incident was truly extraordinary. The fragrance woke us both simultaneously, and even today, I vividly recall its powerful impact.

I am certain that the spirit of her grandmother visited us that night.
